This is my view. From the couch of the tire place. I'm getting a tire plugged. Just a second ago, one of the guys said that my front brakes are almost gone, and I need new pads. They want to charge me $169 for the front. Worth it?

They said that the price also covers resurfacing the rotors. Not sure if do it myself or they do it. It's been so long since I've had the brakes done in any car that I feel like all of the knowledge I once had about it has been sucked out of my head by an evil genius. That and I haven't had any coffee yet this morning.

If it's just a commuter car or something you don't care tons about: Demand some coffee from them, but let them do it. That's not a bad deal considering the rotor turn down and the fact that they and not you are getting filthy this morning.

If it's your baby or a car you are going to have for a long time: Buy better pads, take the rotors to the local autoshop and have them surfaced and in the end know they were done right. Plus, you can leave earlier and get coffee sooner.

you should go have them show you the pads on the car. Unless they are completely gone (which would have made a terrible noise) and have been grinding into the rotors there is not much reason to resurface the rotors

Most brake jobs are pretty simple these days.

I'd do it myself for $50 and some sweat.

I'll bring it back tomorrow for them to do it. It's the DD. I don't have time this morning to have it done, but yup.

I know the brakes need to be done (I've checked it). I already had the rear pads changed.

Price sounds about right. Get a full quote though!

alright then, not a terrible price for the pad replacement. Have you seen if your rotors look scored/scratched up?

If they are, I would say take a look at what new rotors cost for me they cost the same as they wanted to resurface the old ones.

On my car the rotors were the simple type that just slide on the wheel studs, no bearings or anything, so changing them was easy, just remove the calipers and whack them a couple times with a mallet. Also once the calipers are off changing the pads is easy too...

They just do it, the only question would have been if they actually needed it or not.. Between the cost of the pads and the hassle of pulling rotors to get turned, it's not worth it to start the process over another time.

I have a 2006 F150, and I believe them about the rotors. I've been putting the brake job off for a while because I haven't had time to sit in a waiting room. Haven't priced out rotors, though.
